How many hours of sun does your garden get?

Plant labels say full sun, part shade or shade, and they mean hours of direct sun a day. Shade Map measures your house and trees and counts those hours for every patch of your yard, so the tomatoes go where the six hours really are.

Full sun, part shade and shade, in hours

  • Full sun6 hours or moreTomatoes, peppers, squash, beans, roses, lavender, most herbs
  • Part sun / part shade3 to 6 hoursLettuce, spinach, peas, hydrangeas, astilbe, many ground covers
  • ShadeUnder 3 hoursHostas, ferns, impatiens, heuchera, hellebores

Morning sun with afternoon shade suits most part-shade plants better than the reverse: afternoon sun is hotter.

Your garden changes with the seasons

A bed in full sun in June can drop to part shade in spring and autumn, when the sun is lower and every shadow longer. Check the months your plants grow in: for vegetables, March to September; for winter greens, the short days.

Find the sunniest spot before you dig

Shade Map rates every patch of your yard, so you can see where a new bed belongs before you build it, and which corner will stay shady enough for ferns.
